To investigate the effect of maternal proteins on the development of murine models of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the antigen-induced arthritis (AIA) and proteoglycan-induced arthritis (PGIA) models were established. The AIA and PGIA models were used to detect the immunogenicity of hen egg ovalbumin (OVA) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), respectively. AIA and PGIA models were induced by injection of OVA and LPS, respectively. Mice were mated with OVA- and LPS-immunized dams. The effect of maternal proteins on the development of AIA and PGIA was assessed by comparing the clinical signs of arthritis and the level of cytokines in the synovial tissues. The mice from the F0 generation showed less serious arthritis after immunization with OVA or LPS than those of the F1 generation. The relative concentration of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and IL-17 in the serum and synovial tissues of the F0 generation were lower than those of the F1 generation.
